Malaysia Airports Records 11.2% Passenger Growth in 2025 as Travel Demand Strengthens
Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd recorded a stronger travel year in 2025, with passenger movements across its 39 Malaysian airports rising 11.2% year-on-year to 104.4 million passengers. The performance shows that air travel demand continued to recover and expand across the country’s domestic and international airport network.
The group said December was especially active, with its Malaysian airports handling 10 million passengers in a single month. Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the country’s main gateway, contributed 6.1 million passenger movements, supported by the Christmas and New Year travel period, when festive trips and holiday demand usually increase.
Festive Travel Lifted December Airport Traffic
According to MAHB, more than one million passengers passed through its airport network over a three-day peak period in December. Despite the heavy travel volume, the company said operations remained stable, showing that airport planning, manpower coordination and ground processes were able to support the year-end passenger surge.
Managing director Datuk Mohd Izani Ghani said the December performance reflected coordinated planning across the airport network. His comments suggest that passenger growth was not only driven by demand, but also by the ability of airports, airlines and ground teams to manage busier terminals during peak travel windows.
KLIA’s December performance brought its full-year 2025 passenger total to 63.3 million, representing a 10.8% year-on-year increase. This confirms KLIA’s central role in Malaysia’s aviation system, especially as the airport handles a major share of international arrivals, departures, transit passengers and long-haul connectivity.
Growth was not limited to KLIA. Several other Malaysian airports posted strong December improvements, showing wider recovery across the network. Subang Airport led monthly growth with a 34.4% increase, while Kota Kinabalu, Langkawi, Penang and Kuching also recorded double-digit gains in passenger traffic.
New Airlines and Routes Expanded Connectivity
MAHB said passenger growth was supported by new airline partners and added destinations. Better connectivity helps airports attract more passengers by offering extra routes, more flight choices and easier access to regional markets. This is especially important for tourism, business travel, student mobility and cross-border family travel.
In December, Xiamen Airlines launched a three-times-weekly Hangzhou to Kuala Lumpur service at Terminal 2. The addition strengthened China-Malaysia air links and helped support inbound tourism, business movement and leisure travel between Hangzhou and Malaysia’s main international gateway during a busy travel season.
Other China-linked services also expanded. 9 Air introduced three weekly flights from Hangzhou, while Hainan Airlines began a twice-weekly Qionghai to Kuala Lumpur route. These additions show growing demand between Malaysia and Chinese cities, especially as tourism and regional travel continue to normalise.
Batik Air Malaysia also widened its network with several new routes. The airline introduced services to Osaka Kansai, Singapore from Ipoh, Subang and Penang, as well as Kuala Namu and Jakarta. These routes improved Malaysia’s connectivity with Japan, Singapore and Indonesia across both major and secondary airports.
Meanwhile, Firefly launched five weekly flights to Cebu, adding another regional option for travellers between Malaysia and the Philippines. Sichuan Airlines also introduced three weekly Chongqing-Kuala Lumpur flights, further strengthening China connectivity and giving KLIA more depth as a regional aviation gateway.
Operational Readiness Remains Key for Visit Malaysia 2026
Beyond Malaysia, MAHB also manages Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport in Türkiye. The airport handled 49 million passengers in 2025, marking a 17.5% year-on-year increase. In December alone, the airport processed 4.2 million passengers, reflecting strong international performance outside MAHB’s Malaysian operations.
The strong performance in both Malaysia and Türkiye highlights MAHB’s role as a major airport operator with growing international exposure. Higher passenger traffic can improve airport retail, food and beverage sales, advertising value, parking demand, airline partnerships and overall terminal activity, provided operations remain smooth and capacity is managed well.
Looking ahead, MAHB said it will remain focused on operational readiness and capacity management as travel activity continues into Visit Malaysia 2026. This will be important because higher tourist arrivals, new routes and stronger domestic movement can place pressure on check-in, security, immigration, baggage and terminal circulation.
Overall, Malaysia Airports’ 2025 results show a stronger aviation market supported by festive travel, route expansion and passenger confidence. With KLIA reaching 63.3 million passengers and the Malaysian network surpassing 104 million, the group enters Visit Malaysia 2026 with positive momentum and a clear need to maintain efficient airport operations.
