KLIA Tests AI-Powered Kerbside System to Ease Terminal Traffic

Malaysia Airports is trialling the Vehicle Access Management System at KLIA Terminals 1 and 2 to improve kerbside movement at arrivals and departures. The system supports smarter, safer and more efficient airport operations by helping vehicles move in a more organised way around busy terminal access areas.

The fully automated system uses AI technology, smart cameras and sensors to monitor vehicle flow. Its purpose is to reduce congestion, prevent illegal or prolonged parking and keep airport kerbsides moving smoothly. This is especially important at terminal frontages where passengers, drivers, luggage and airport staff share limited space.

AI Monitoring for Safer Airport Kerbsides

With VAMS in place, passengers can expect a safer and more convenient airport experience. The system helps reduce traffic jams and keeps the area more organised for travellers. By managing vehicle behaviour more consistently, KLIA can improve both traffic efficiency and passenger safety during busy travel periods.

KLIA’s terminals can handle up to 45,000 vehicles daily, with as many as 5,000 cars during peak hours. These figures show why proper kerbside management is important. Without a structured system, drop-off and pick-up areas can quickly become congested, unsafe and stressful for passengers.

Ten-Minute Grace Period for Drivers

Compared with some international airports, KLIA’s proposed kerbside rule is more lenient. The system includes a 10-minute grace period for drop-offs and pick-ups, giving drivers enough time to unload luggage, assist passengers or wait briefly for arriving travellers without facing immediate penalties.

This wider time window helps reduce stress for airport users. Some overseas airports impose very short stopping limits, which can pressure drivers and passengers. KLIA’s approach is more practical because airport movement can be affected by luggage, elderly passengers, children, rain, traffic delays or unexpected flight timing.

Smoother Flow and Fairer Enforcement

VAMS is designed to be easy to use, with multiple exit lanes to help vehicles leave the kerbside efficiently. Traffic marshals will also be available to support enforcement and emergencies. This human assistance is important when vehicles break down, drivers need guidance or unusual traffic situations occur.

The system promotes fair and transparent kerbside management while allowing flexibility for unexpected delays such as traffic disruption or vehicle breakdowns. Overall, VAMS should help KLIA create a smoother, safer and more organised experience for passengers, drivers, airport workers and other terminal users.
